Korova were born amidst the ruins of desolate East Lothian
fishing towns and Edinburgh city centre bohemia in the spring of 2005. Their
sound emerges from the dimly-lit bars and glittering nightclubs spread eagle-like
across these northern streets. Just four strong, KikiKorova, FifiKorova, KitiKorova
and GigiKorova occupy their ranks; the shared moniker suggesting a musical acquiescence
confirmed by their monolithic sound.
Keen to avoid the tired clichés that sway albatross like around the necks
of their peers, Korova speak of universal themes with a unique voice and arresting
intensity. These are timeless paeans of the now, shot through with a verve only
the fearlessness of youth can generate. Reckless dancing, failed romance, fur
hats and childhood nightmares coalesce here, bound together by the philosophical
glue of Moran, Izzard and Hicks. In a bold statement against the elitism of
an increasingly staid ‘indie scene’, Korova’s dark and angular
rhythm section is underscored by a sharp wit and unabashed love for the frivolous
decadence of great pop music. These grand soap operas of the heart fit and start
like the synapses of a re-born flatliner and remain no less life affirming.
Korova’s distinct approach has garnered an overwhelming whirlwind of critical
praise, the zenith of which comprised a 98% landslide victory on the Radio 1
Unsigned Sessions listener’s poll in the autumn of 2005. Despite not yet
having gained an official release, the anthemic “Just Like Peter Cook”
was voted best song of 2005 by London-based independent radio station Earwax,
usurping such luminaries as Arcade Fire, Maximo Park and The Magic Numbers.
10th July 2006 signals the next step in Korova’s ascendancy, as “Just
Like Peter Cook” and “Microwave Romance” are released as a
limited edition AA-side 7” single. Beyond the confines of rhetoric and
hyperbole, Korova have arrived to claim 2006 as their own.
